Why Is My Toilet Leaking at the Base?

Few plumbing issues are as frustrating as spotting water pooling around the base of your toilet. It’s no doubt a nuisance and unsightly, but did you know it can also damage your flooring, cause mold growth, and even mean a higher monthly water bill?

A faulty wax ring
One of the most common reasons a toilet leaks at the base is a faulty wax ring. This ring, usually made of wax or a wax-free alternative, creates a seal between the toilet and the drainpipe. When installed properly, it keeps wastewater from seeping out onto the floor.
If the wax ring wasn’t installed tightly, it can shift or slide. This movement is enough to break the seal and create an opening where water can escape. Over time, the problem can get worse, especially if the toilet rocks slightly when you sit on it.
Once a wax ring has failed, it can’t be repaired. Instead, the toilet needs to be removed, the old ring replaced, and the toilet reinstalled.
Other Reasons for a Leaky Toilet Base
If the wax ring on your toilet is intact, here are other issues to look for:
Loose toilet bolts – If the bolts holding the toilet to the floor aren’t tightened evenly, the toilet can shift just enough to break the seal.
Cracked toilet base – Even a small hairline crack in the porcelain can allow water to seep out during each flush.
Condensation – If your home gets humid in the summer months, it’s possible for water droplets to form on the tank and drip down, making it look like a leak at the base.
