Why is Cincinnati tap water sometimes cloudy?

If you’ve ever turned on the tap and noticed cloudy or milky-looking water, you’re not alone. It’s a common issue in Cincinnati homes, and while it may look concerning, it’s usually harmless. That said, it’s helpful to know what’s behind the haze and when it’s worth having a plumber take a closer look.

Solving Cincinnati's cloudy water issue

The most common cause: air bubbles

In most cases, your cloudy tap water is caused by tiny air bubbles. These bubbles form when cold water in underground pipes mixes with warmer water in your home’s plumbing. When the pressure changes, like when you turn on the tap, the air is released into the water and causes it to look cloudy.

This is especially common in the winter or early spring, when the difference between outside and indoor temperatures is greatest. The good news? If the cloudiness clears from the bottom up after the water sits for a minute or two, it’s just air.

Other possible causes of cloudy tap water

While tiny air bubbles are the most common cause of cloudy tap water in Cincinnati, they’re not the only reason your water might look off. Several other factors can affect water clarity.

Common non-air-related causes include:

  • Sediment or mineral buildup - Aging pipes, especially in older homes, can release sediment or minerals into the water. This may result in cloudiness that doesn’t clear quickly and could give the water a gritty or metallic taste.

  • Water main repairs - Nearby maintenance work can stir up sediment in the water lines. While the Greater Cincinnati Water Works usually flushes lines after repairs, it may take several hours, or up to a day, for the water to run clear again.

These causes are usually temporary, but if cloudiness continues, it’s worth digging a little deeper.

When it’s time to call a plumber

If your tap water stays cloudy, no matter how long it sits, or if there’s an unusual smell or taste, it could point to a more serious issue within your home’s plumbing system. That’s when it’s smart to bring in a professional.

A licensed plumber can help identify and resolve issues like:

  • Sediment buildup in your water heater: Over time, minerals can collect in the tank and affect both water clarity and temperature consistency.

  • Deteriorating or corroded pipes: As pipes age, they can break down and release rust or debris into your water supply.

  • Cross-contamination risks: Plumbing systems with outdated or improperly installed components may allow contaminants to enter the water supply.

A professional inspection can determine whether the problem is inside your home or coming from the municipal supply and make sure your water is safe to use.
