Do I Need an Emergency Plumber?

It can be hard to know if you’re plumbing problem warrants immediate attention.

While some plumbing issues can wait. Others should not.

A slow drain, minor faucet drip, or running toilet may be able to wait for a regular service appointment. But if there is active water damage, sewage backup, no working toilet, or a major leak, it is better to call right away.

A good rule of thumb: if the problem could damage your property, create a health risk, or stop your home or business from functioning, treat it as an emergency. Call us immediately if you’re dealing with any of the following problems:

Sewage Backup

If sewage is coming up through a floor drain, bathtub, shower, toilet, or sink, act fast. A sewage backup can create a serious health hazard and may point to a blocked or damaged main sewer line.

This is especially urgent if more than one drain is backing up at the same time.

Water Leaking into Your Home or Business

A small drip may not seem like a big deal, but water damage can add up quickly. If water is actively leaking from a pipe, ceiling, wall, toilet, water heater, or plumbing fixture, shut off the water if you can and call for help.

Leaks are especially urgent when water is near electrical outlets, appliances, flooring, drywall, or finished basement areas.

Burst or Frozen Pipes

Cincinnati winters can be hard on plumbing. If a pipe freezes and bursts, it can release a large amount of water in a short period of time. Shut off the main water valve if possible and call an emergency plumber.

Signs of a frozen or burst pipe may include little or no water from a faucet, visible swelling or

cracking in a pipe, water stains, or unexplained water on the floor.

No Working Toilet

If your home or business has only one toilet and it is clogged, overflowing, or unusable, that’s an emergency. Own or manage a restaurant? Having just one clogged toilet can lead to a poor customer experience that can end up on a Google or Yelp review.

While you can often unclog a toilet yourself with a plunger (when used correctly), if you’re unsuccessful, it’s time to call a plumber.

Multiple Clogged Drains

One clogged sink may be a simple drain issue. Multiple clogged drains can point to a bigger problem in the main sewer line.

If toilets, tubs, showers, or floor drains are backing up at the same time, call a plumber. This isn’t the time to keep plunging and hoping for the best.

Water Heater Leaks

If your water heater is leaking from the tank itself, it may need to be replaced. A leaking water heater can damage flooring, walls, and nearby belongings. If water is spreading or the tank appears to be failing, treat it as urgent.

If the leak is small but steady, call us as soon as possible.

Commercial Plumbing Emergencies

For restaurants, bars, nursing homes, assisted living facilities, schools, offices, and other businesses, plumbing problems can quickly interrupt daily operations.

Call for emergency plumbing service if you have:

  • A clogged or overflowing restroom

  • A grease trap backup

  • A sewer smell in the building

  • A kitchen drain backup

  • Water leaking in a customer or patient area

  • No working restroom access

  • A plumbing issue that could force your business to close

What You Can Do Before the Plumber Arrives

In a plumbing emergency, a few quick steps may help limit damage.

Shut Off the Water

If there is active leaking, shut off the water supply if you can do so safely.

For sinks and toilets, look for a small shutoff valve near the fixture. For larger leaks, you may need to shut off the main water valve for the property.

Stop Using Water

If drains are backing up, stop running water. Do not flush toilets, run the dishwasher, start laundry, or keep using sinks. More water can make the backup worse.

Avoid Chemical Drain Cleaners

Chemical drain cleaners may seem like a quick fix, but they can damage pipes, create safety risks, and make the situation harder for a plumber to handle. If the clog is severe, recurring, or affecting multiple drains, it is better to call a professional.

Move Items Away from the Area

If water is leaking or backing up, move furniture, rugs, boxes, electronics, and personal items away from the affected area if you can do so safely.

Stay Away from Sewage

If sewage is backing up into your home or business, avoid direct contact. Sewage can carry bacteria and other contaminants that are dangerous to our health. Make sure to keep children and pets away from the area until it’s cleaned and sanitized.
